World Kindness Day (13th November) happens once a year where - well, it’s the same as the name on the tin. It’s designed for people to highlight good deeds, show appreciation, and encourage an onward chain of random acts of kindness - whether to friends and family or a stranger on the street - in the hopes of setting off a positive domino effect.
But we at RotaCloud didn’t let a single day confine us. Our day for random acts of kindness turned into a week - then a whole month!
And it didn’t stop with us RotaCloud folk.
How to celebrate World Kindness Day
At RotaCloud, it all began through a Slack channel named ‘Make Someone’s Day’. Here, people could anonymously (or un-anonymously, if we were brave enough) offer appreciation to each other, shouting out specific people to compliment them for something amazing they did or, well, simply being them!
And boy. People didn’t disappoint.
But of course, it didn’t stop there. A week turned into two. Then, something else happened: We took our World Kindness Day outside the RotaCloud office walls.
We gave every single RotaCloud employee a £5 gift card. What was that £5 for? To spend on someone else: family, friend, or stranger. Whether that was grabbing a coffee for the person behind you in the queue, sending someone flowers, or just getting a little gift to show someone you’re thinking of them.
This helped turn our Kindness Week into a whole month.
All this was to encourage us to take a step back and think of others - which we can easily overlook when caught up in busy lives and long shifts.
It helps all see that we’re all human. We’re all more than a job title or someone out running an errand. Every person we pass on the street or see at the supermarket or in a cafe has their own life. We all have gripes and ongoing challenges no one knows about. So, offering a friend or stranger a small piece of kindness can truly make a difference - and make their day.
Which is exactly what we did.
Here are just a few ways we made someone’s day…
- Sending flowers to a friend who recently received bad news
- Giving £5 to a tired mum and her young daughter at the supermarket
- Bought a coffee for someone behind in the cafe queue, offering a coffee voucher to a stranger, or sending one to a friend
- Buying a sunflower planter for a friend’s sick little girl
- Gave a TooGoodToGo order to the people behind
- Got bags of apples, carrots & celery for racehorses
- Bought flowers for Mum to celebrate getting through chemo
This is why ‘Make Someone’s Day’ is one of RotaCloud’s core values. People are important, whether they’re employees, customers, or strangers, and we appreciate how big an impact even the briefest interaction can have.
Thoughtfulness, generosity, and supporting each other are memorable moments for people - and it’s something we encourage RotaCloud (and you reading this!) to continue past our World Kindness Month.
How will you make someone’s day?
